On the occasion of September 11, FC Barcelona and its Foundation have released a historical video highlighting the close connection between the club and its commitment to promoting the Catalan language and Catalan identity.

The video offers a chronological journey through the most significant historical milestones of this relationship, from the beginning of the 20th century to the present day. It is accompanied by iconic images, many of them from Spotify Camp Nou, featuring supporters and some of the most emblematic players in Barça’s history. 

The video begins with a historic milestone: in 1910, the four stripes of the Senyera appeared on the Barça crest for the first time. Six years later, a Club document, specifically the minutes of a Board of Directors meeting held in July, was written in Catalan for the first time. Two years later, in 1918, Catalan became FC Barcelona’s official language, and the following year the Club took part for the first time in the commemoration of September 11.

This commitment has remained unwavering to the present day, even during the most politically challenging periods, when Catalan was marginalized in society. In 1972, defying the Francoist authorities, a message in Catalan was broadcast over the Camp Nou public address system for the first time to announce that a lost child had been found in the stadium. After the dictatorship, FC Barcelona, as one of Catalonia’s most important institutions, became a pioneer in the restoration and promotion of the language.

More than a century has passed, and Barça’s commitment to defending and promoting the Catalan language and the values of Catalan identity remains as strong as ever. For this reason, FC Barcelona and the FC Barcelona Foundation have launched a series of initiatives to encourage the use of Catalan among the Barça community and to reinforce the role of the language as one of the defining features of both the Club and Catalan society.
