Barça legends donates more than €350,000 to children’s cancer centre
FC Barcelona has once again shown its support for the Cancer Paediatric Centre run by the Fundació Sant Joan de Déu by making a new donation of more than 350,000 euros thanks to the money raised by the two matches between Barça Legends and Manchester United Legends on June 30 at the Camp Nou and September 2 at Old Trafford.
In an event held on Friday in the Josep Sunyol presidential suite at the Camp Nou, the vice-president of FC Barcelona and its Foundation, Jordi Cardoner, director Pau Vilanova and the coach of the Barça Legends team, Albert ‘Chapi’ Ferrer, handed over the cheque for 350,000 euros to the director of the Fundació Sant Joan de Déu, Manuel del Castillo.
The Legends team is made up various former stars who have played against a number of other veteran teams, including Manchester United.
With this latest contribution, the total raised to help build the future Cancer Paediatric Centre now amounts to over 15 million euros.
Barça Foundation collaborations
The Barça Foundation has also made donations via its partnership agreement, as well as through different fundraising efforts involving supporters clubs, social centres, private donations made to the website, etc.
One of the biggest donors to the project is the Leo Messi Foundation. The player himself has personally supported the fundraising campaigns run up to now.
Photo album of workers
Today also saw the presentation of a photo album made by club staff, showing all of the pictures from a competition involving different departments to show their solidarity and support for the #ToTheBrave campaign.
Sant Joan de Déu has managed to raise 15 million euros through the #ParaLosValientes campaign that it launched in February to call on public support to help make the project a reality by making small and large donations. Over these months, thousands of people and a high number of companies and organisations from different sectors have answered the call. But a further 15 million euros are still needed to build what will be the biggest children’s cancer centre in Europe.
SJD PEDIATRIC Cancer Center Barcelona
The new SJD Pediatric Cancer Center Barcelona will have the capacity to care for 400 patients a year, 30% more than Sant Joan de Déu caters for at present (215 new cases a year and 70 cases of relapse or second opinion) and will include the very latest developments in the fight against cancer.
Its facilities will cover a total surface area of 8,400 square metres in a four-storey building located next to Hospital Sant Joan de Déu.
Statement by Jordi Cardoner
“Through its foundation, FC Barcelona is collaborating with this project so that it can soon become a reality and be used to save lives. We also want to thank the Barça Legends for this gesture, as it is thanks to them that we are able to make this donation to the Cancer Pediatric Center at Hospital de Sant Joan de Déu, which celebrates its 150th anniversary this year and is an emblematic institution in the city”.
Statement by Manuel del Castillo
“Barça and Sant Joan de Déu are two institutions that have been around for over a hundred years and both are very deeply rooted in the city. We and our teams are working hard on this project, but we must admit that Barça’s support has been absolutely fundamental”.
Statement by Pau Vilanova
“I’d like to say how pleased we are, in the name of the Barça Legends, to have contributed to this cause. And I’d like to add that the players have been fully implicated from the very first minute and fully committed to taking part and helping out with their contribution to the project”.
Statement by Albert Ferrer
“We should stress the great response from the crowd that we got for the game at the Camp Nou with more than 50,000 people coming to watch. It was a great response considering that we are ex-players. I’d also highlight the major implication of the players, who have acted as true professionals by taking the games so totally seriously. But before and after we think about how by doing our bit we can help to make lives better. And that makes everything worthwhile”.
