Barça Foundation, Nike and Gasol Foundation seal commitment to social inclusion

Three organisations join forces to foster sport and physical activity among Barcelona youth

The Barça Foundation, Nike and the Gasol Foundation have announced their program for positive change in Barcelona in the form of a three-year agreement to guarantee better access to play and sport for children.

The partnership between the Barça Foundation and Nike will give support to a project using the FutbolNet methodology offered to boys and girls from underprivileged backgrounds so they get the chance to take part in weekly extracurricular activities at seven community centres and schools. The activities are run by a group of specialised teachers who use sport as a means for inclusion. The main goal is to have a positive impact on the lives of 300 children in Barcelona.

The agreement will also help to improve the situation of many children in Barcelona through Made to Play, the Nike program to get youngsters to use sport and games to make their lives healthier, happier and more successful. Additionally, together with the Gasol Foundation they will be supporting the FIVALIN program focused on sport and physical activity having a positive impact on children and their families.

As Jordi Cardoner, vice-president of FC Barcelona and the Barça Foundation puts it: "By means of our own methodology we use sport as a driver of change in the lives of children in disadvantaged communities. Our program fosters the FC Barcelona values of Humility, Effort, Ambition, Respect and Teamwork (HEART) that are all part of a cooperative culture that supports individuals and the community as a whole. These goals are aligned with the Barça Foundation’s mission and Nike’s commitment to Made to Play. Through this program we are committed to the power of sport to make essential changes."

"Barcelona is an ideal setting for sport and physical activity” says Dan Burrows, senior director of social and community impact at Nike in the EMEA region. “To protect children and help them to achieve their maximum potential, we are using the power of sport and our relations with inspirational athletes and teams to make a difference. Through this agreement with the Barça Foundation, we can help children to play, run and jump towards a better future.”

"Boys and girls at risk of social exclusion are a priority for us” adds Cristina Ribes, executive director of the Gasol Foundation. “Recent research shows that there is a relationship between socio-economic factors and obesity. That is why it is so important to foster healthy habits among families. Thanks to the partnership with Made to Play, these children and families in Barcelona will be able to benefit from our program.”
