FC Barcelona player Gerard Piqué; the First Vice President of FC Barcelona and FC Barcelona Foundation, Jordi Cardoner; the mayor of Sant Guim de Freixenet, Francesc Lluch; the President of the Cruyff Foundation, Susila Cruyff, and the Director of the Commercial Action and Education Area of the Fundació Bancària ”la Caixa”, Xavier Bertolín, were all present on Wednesday to inaugurate the Cruyff Court Gerard Piqué to help promote sport among children and young people in the area. The event was also attended by the ex-Barça player, Carles Puyol.

This initiative has been made possible by the alliance between the Cruyff Foundation, the FC Barcelona Foundation and the Fundació Bancària “la Caixa”. Fifteen Cruyff Courts will be built, maintained and put in use around Catalonia, with a focus on deprived areas, to help promote social inclusion among the young through sport.

Cruyff Courts are small football pitches that are open for anybody to use and look to encourage sport and values such as responsibility, integration, teamwork and personal development as well as tackling child obesity.

The court inaugurated on Thursday in Sant Guim de Freixenet joins the Cruyff Court Hristo Stoichkov Martorell, the Cruyff Court Sergio Busquets in Badia del Vallès, and the Cruyff Court Carles Puyol in Pobla de Segur. The first step in this project was taken with the opening of the Cruyff Court Xavi Hernández in Terrassa.

The initiative also promotes two specific projects on these courts: the Cruyff Courts 6 v 6 tournaments for children aged ten to twelve; and the Community Program, which aims to encourage young people from different areas to learn how to organise their own tournaments.

The Cruyff Court projects' expansion across Catalonia is another example of the alliance between the three entities which is also promoting the ‘Pati 14’ project aimed at renovating ten unused areas in schools around Catalonia.

GERARD PIQUÉ STATEMENTS

“I was able to share a dressing room with Johan when he coached the Catalan national team and it was an honour. This new Cruyff Court will be a unforgettable experience and I am happy that this initiative has come to Sant Guim de Freixenet. The project starts today and there is lots of work to do.”

JORDI CARDONER STATEMENTS

“The FC Barcelona Foundation is continuing to support Johan’s social legacy represented by the Cruyff Foundation. It is an honour to work with this entity and the Obra Social “laCaixa” for those who need it the most, the children. The participation of first team players helps us do it in an engaging way.”
