The FC Barcelona legends are gearing up for a highly-anticipated match against the Manchester United legends on 30 June.
But as well as the star players who will feature in it, the game will hold far bigger importance due to its charitable element, as the funds collected from ticket sales will be allocated to the construction of the new Sant Joan de Déu Pediatric Cancer Centre, a pioneering project in which the FC Barcelona Foundation, the Leo Messi Foundation and the IESE Business School are involved.
The SJD Pediatric Cancer Center will be the largest pediatric oncology center in Europe, will incorporate the latest technology in the fight against the disease, and will have the capacity to attend to 400 patients a year.
To help achieve the €30m required for its construction, the #paralosvalientes campaign, starring Leo Messi, was launched in February. Contributions can be made through: www.fundacio.fcbarcelona.cat
On Wednesday, former players Patrick Kluivert and Gaizka Mendieta, two representatives of the Barça Legends who will participate in the game, wanted to show the team's commitment to this project, and mimicked the campaign's gesture, that of the warrior. which Messi made world famous a few months ago. In addition, on the morning of the 30th, some of the Barça Legends will visit the San Juan de Déu hospital to learn more about the new cancer centre.
"It is important that, starting with us, we can return to society everything that football has given us," said Mendieta, highlighting the initiative. For Kluivert, the most significant aspect is that the project can improve the health of many children in Catalonia and around the world.
