The FCB Foundation, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and Global Citizen promote a campaign to raise awareness of this great global challenge
The official poster of the 'Let's beat extreme poverty' campaign.
During FC Barcelona’s US tour this summer, the FC Barcelona Foundation, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and Global Citizenmade public their willingness to work together to fight poverty, one of the major challenges facing society today.
The first results stemming from this agreement are now being seen in the form of a video featuring the first team players Andrés Iniesta, Adriano Correia, Gerard Piqué, Lionel Messi and Marc-André ter Stegen. Under the motto Let’s beat extreme poverty, the players appeal to a sense of personal commitment under the argument that, if everyone gets involved, in any way they can, this enormous problem can be solved, little by little.
Although the last fifteen years have seen great success in the fight against extreme poverty, there are still 700 million people living in poverty today.
Commitment to Objectives for Sustainable Development
Anyone wishing to participate should register on the Global Citizen webiste and agree to carry out various actions designed to increase visibility of the issue of extreme poverty, mainly by disseminating messages through social media. As a reward, the most active participants will be entered in a draw for tickets, donated by the FCB Foundation, to two games this season at Camp Nou: the clashes with AtléticoMadrid and Valencia in La Liga.
This project was born from the FC Barcelona Foundation’s commitment to actively help with the great challenges set by the United Nations regarding Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), a list of seventeen objectives in international development that were outlined at the UN General Assembly in September. The first on the list is to “End poverty in all its forms everywhere.” Others include ending hunger, improving nutrition, and ensuring healthy lives and quality education.
The alliance between the FC Barcelona Foundation and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation was established in 2011, and has recently been joined by Global Citizen, an online community of people wishing to learn and act on the greatest challenges facing our society. In addition to fighting poverty, the organization, which was founded in 2012, has also joined the struggle to eradicate polio, provide access to healthcare and ensure gender equality, as well as other issues.
