FC Barcelona has always been committed to alleviating the most serious problems in today’s society, and over the next few months, its Foundation will be supporting another initiative against extreme poverty. The highlight will be what is being billed as the Global Festival, organised by the Global Poverty Project, which is being designed to raise awareness of such a serious issue.
September 29 in Central Park, New York
The charity concert will be held on September 29 in New York’s Central Park, and coincides with the holding of the General Assembly of the United Nations in the same city that week. The show is also being supported by the likes of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, UNICEF and the WHO, and features such international acts as Foo Fighters, K’Naan and Neil Young. FC Barcelona and its Foundation will also be involved by means of audiovisual messages and different actions all day in Central Park.
Tickets cannot be bought by the usual means. Instead, people are invited to go to Global Festival and carry out a series of actions against poverty as indicated by the organisers. Those that comply then go into a prize draw, with sets of two tickets for each of the winners. The more actions users carry out, the better their chances of getting lucky. It is therefore a project that encourages people to take direct action against world poverty.
During the weeks prior to the concert, the aim will be to attract as many people as possible, and FC Barcelona and its Foundation will be doing their bit via its usual communication channels, seeing as this project is so closely tied to the club’s own social values and identity.
Global Poverty Project, against extreme poverty in the world
The Global Poverty Project was created in 2008 to foster change in relation to world poverty. It sets up campaigns and organises actions to raise awareness and also encourages and educates society in ways of doing our bit to have a positive impact on the fight against such problems.
Its previous projects have included “1.4 Billion Reasons”, named after the number of people in the world believed to be living in extreme poverty, a ground-breaking multimedia presentation that explains the factors behind extreme poverty and ways of combating it. That project has already been seen by some 100,000 people around the world.
The Global Poverty Project stresses the urgency of this problem and the need for the global community to come together and help eradicate it. Knowing that this process can never be quick, the Global Poverty Project believes that everybody has the chance to do their bit to change things.
The Bill&Melinda Gates Foundation, with which the FC Barcelona Foundation has already had a collaboration agreement since last year in the fight against polio, is one of the main partners of the Global Poverty Project. So, this initiative offers FC Barcelona, via its Foundation and in association once again with its partners at the Bill&Melinda Gates Foundation and UNICEF, the chance to participate in a high-profile global charity initiative.
