The FC Barcelona Foundation supports World Polio Day

The World Polio Day is celebrated every year on October 24th . The disease has been eradicated in 99.9% of the world, but is still present in Afghanistan, Nigeria and Pakistan

To mark World Polio Day, FC Barcelona would like to reaffirm its commitment to the fight against the disease, which although it has disappeared from 99.9% of the world, is still present in Afghanistan, Nigeria and Pakistan.

In order to continue the fight for the complete disappearance of this disease, the FC Barcelona Foundation is working closely with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, which has led a number of initiatives to place the fight in the public eye, with the “More than a Goal. End Polio” project.

Recent participation in the UN General Assembly

As a result of the alliance between the Club and the Gates Foundation, the FC Barcelona President was invited by the Foundation to take part in the session concerning the eradication of Polio held as part of the last General Assembly of the United Nations in New York. The meeting was attended the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and set out a route map to be followed by public and private organisations to eliminate the disease.

FC Barcelona was invited to attend in recognition of its commitment to social issues and as an organisation which has put all its support behind publicising the initiative. Below is President Sandro Rosell’s speech at the UN.
