Lilian Thuram presents at the Camp Nou ‘My Black Stars’
Former Barça player Lilian Thuram was the protagonist this Thursday in Sala París for the presentation of his book ‘My Black Stars’ (Publisher: Now Books), in which he describes some of his personal heroes in order to “enrich the knowledge and minds of the readers”, as stated in the synopsis, “as the best way of fighting against racism and intolerance”. In his book, the Frenchman presents the biographies of fifty black people and describes their contributions to history, sport, politics and culture.
Racism, an intellectual construction
Thuram was joined at the presentation by Ramon Garriga, patron of the FC Barcelona Foundation, and Marina Penalva, of publishing house Now Books. Garriga calls the book a “deconstruction of racism” and considers it “committed to the benefit of everyone”. Meanwhile, Thuram added that racism “is a political, economic and cultural construction” and that football “helps to change the way people see others”. The former France international also confessed that he hopes his book “can help to change mentalities”.
The FC Barcelona Foundation has collaborated with the presentation of the project by means of an agreement made with the Lilian Thuram Foundation, through which both entities foster actions to favour the fight against racism and discrimination. The book includes a prologue by Uruguayan writer and journalist, Eduardo Galeano, which the Foundation presented with the Vàzquez Montalbán Award two years ago, and who considers the book “a major contribution”.
